Sanyo Mirro SCP3810
Sanyo introduced the SCP-5300 camera phone a few months ago, we were clearly impressed with the company’s efforts. The only aspect that might keep that impressive mobile from having mass-market appeal is its prohibitive price point.

Enter the SCP-8100, an arguably affordable phone/camera that has many of the sought-after features of its sibling without the high cost. The Sanyo SCP-8100 is more compact (3.3 by 1.8 by 1.1 inches; 3.9 ounces) than the SCP-5300 and fits better in a small purse or a pocket. However, you’ll find the same overall design: a built-in camera and a small, 65,000-color external LCD that not only displays network strength, battery life, time, and caller ID info when available but also a picture of those calling (if they have an image associated with their phone-book entries). All that’s missing cosmetically from this slimmer model is a built-in flash.

Open the flip phone, and you’ll see that the SCP-8100′s internal, 1.8-inch, 65,000-color, eight-line TFT display is the real eye-catcher. We particularly appreciated the animated green alien that sometimes skateboards from side to side. The Sanyo’s list-type menu interface is easy to navigate via the phone’s four-way navi-button and two dedicated menu-selection keys.

Like the SCP-5300, you can snap pictures using the large internal display as the image finder for the digital camera or flip the phone closed and go to the small, 1-inch external display to frame a self-portrait. The latter also serves as a decent substitute for a mirror in a pinch. On the side of the phone, there’s a shutter-release button, a headset jack, and two volume-control buttons, which can be used to scroll through the 5300′s menus.

As you might expect, if you’re running out of subjects in your own life to decorate your phone, you can always download graphics, pictures, and polyphonic sounds from the Sprint PCS Vision site. In the features department, the 8100 has its fair share. Highlights include a 300-name phone book, voice-activated dialing for up to 30 names, menus, caller ID, text messaging, a vibrating ringer, voicemail, games, a calendar, a world clock, and wireless Web access via Sprint’s 1xRTT next-generation network. Although the phone will work with a separate USB cable to upload images directly from phone to computer, it lacks an IR port to easily transfer images to other IR-enabled devices, such as a Palm or Pocket PC. (Note: The Samsung V205 has an IR port, but you can’t use it to beam images to other IR products.)

LG Saber 0 komentar

LG Saber
The price of texting cell phones has come way down. Case in point: the LG Saber, a QWERTY-equipped slab phone on U.S. Cellular that costs just $9.99 up front. You don’t get much for this price, though. If you’re interested in playing music or snapping photos, look elsewhere. But for pure messaging addicts, the Saber is a steal.

Design and Call Quality
The LG Saber measures 4.5 by 2.4 by 0.5 inches (HWD) and weighs 3.6 ounces. It’s made of a mixture of matte and glossy plastics, and finished in a pleasing dark gray. While the Saber is a standard slab QWERTY handset, it looks a bit strange thanks to the display’s portrait orientation; nearly every other handset in this form factor has a landscape screen. The 2.2-inch, non-touch LCD sports 176-by-220-pixel resolution. It’s bright and colorful enough. The five-way control pad is tough to use, since the raised edge is too small. You can’t see it in photos, but pressing the up button is uncomfortable, since you constantly hit the bottom edge of the plastic frame surrounding the screen. The four-row QWERTY keyboard features raised, bubbled, plastic keys. Key arrangement and typing resistance are fine, and I had no problem using it for extended messaging sessions.

More

The LG Saber is a dual-band, 2G 1xRTT (850/1900 MHz) device. Voice quality was just okay. Callers sounded thin but otherwise clear in the earpiece. Through the microphone, my voice sounded a little unnatural and computery, as if I was speaking through a headset. Reception was fine. Calls sounded good through an Aliph Jawbone Icon Bluetooth headset ($99, 4 stars). Voice dialing worked fine over Bluetooth without training. The speakerphone went quite loud, although it distorted a bit at the top two volume settings. Battery life was good at 6 hours and 22 minutes of talk time.

Apps, Multimedia, and Conclusions
The main OS is responsive enough. The main menu features 12 icons in a grid pattern. U.S. Cellular’s browser icon is separate from the EasyEdge walled garden, and lets you enter custom URLs via a buried option in a submenu; WAP pages looked fine. The phone comes with 33 ringtones, many of which went super-loud. You can download ringtones, wallpaper, and games through the portal. There are no e-mail or IM clients, and while U.S. Cellular claims GPS support, I couldn’t find a navigation app.

Speaking of things that are missing, there’s also no music player, video player, or camcorder, either. As a result, the non-standard 2.5mm headphone jack is fine, as it’s only intended for mono hands-free earbuds. The VGA camera is useless. We understand trying to hit a price point, but we consider 1.3-megapixels a bare minimum; otherwise photos don’t even fill up a standard laptop screen. There’s 85MB of free internal user storage and no memory card slot. You can share photos online, over Bluetooth, or via picture message.

So this sounds like a mixed review, but the LG Saber is actually fine for its intended purpose: messaging on a strict budget. For that, it gets the job done, and it’s not bad for voice calls, either. Still, I’d recommend spending an extra $20 on the Samsung Messager Touch SCH-R630 ($29.99, 3 stars), which gives you a roomier QWERTY keyboard, a music player, a Web browser, and an expansive (if somewhat stubborn) touch screen. If you want a little more power than the Saber but don’t text much, the LG Wine II UN430 ($39.99, 4 stars) is our Editors’ Choice for U.S. Cellular feature phones. It lacks a QWERTY keyboard, but it has a better camera and a real music player, and it looks classier to boot.
