The Samsung Stride is a no-frills flip phone. We like no-frills flip phones. Many offer great ways to save money on your monthly bills, especially when used in conjunction with a separate music player. If it’s on a budget-priced regional carrier like U.S.

Cellular and you live in the appropriate coverage area, so much the better. But the Stride is too lazy; it feels like a three-year-old cell phone that’s still on sale, instead of something new. There are better choices at the U.S. Cellular retail counter.

Design and Call Quality
The Samsung Stride measures 3.7 by 1.9 by 0.7 inches (HWD) and weighs 3.1 ounces. It’s made entirely of plastic, though Samsung adds a little flair with its textured, translucent front cover and metal-look red accents. The 1.1-inch, passive-matrix external display offers a retro-looking, 8-bit style LED clock. I like it, but your mileage may vary. The internal 1.9-inch LCD offers 176-by-220-pixel resolution, and looks sharp and bright for a low-end phone. The numeric keypad features large, soft-touch keys that are extremely comfortable to use, despite their somewhat flat look. Five function keys surrounded a hard plastic, rounded, five-way control pad. Dialing numbers and navigating the device were a cinch.

The Stride is a dual-band 1xRTT (850/1900 MHz) device with no Wi-Fi. Voice calls sounded good overall, with a clear, balanced tone in the earpiece, plenty of gain, and no background hiss. Callers had few complaints as well, and reception was good. Calls sounded clear through an Aliph Jawbone Icon Bluetooth headset ($99, 4 stars). The Nuance-powered voice dialing worked perfectly over Bluetooth without training. The speakerphone sounded clear and went loud enough for outdoor use; always a good thing. Battery life was fine at five hours of talk time.

Apps, Multimedia, and Conclusions
Samsung designed what it calls Touchwiz Lite, a stripped-down version of the company’s proprietary UI layer, for the Stride. The main menu features twelve small icons arranged in a grid pattern. You get the usual compliment of basic phone tools, like a stopwatch, voice recorder, and a 500-entry phone book. The Novarra Web browser requires several key presses and sluggish page loads before letting you enter a URL. It’s fine for displaying WAP pages once you put up with that nonsense. The mobile e-mail client connects to all the major Web portals, but it’s sluggish, and this isn’t a texting phone anyway.

The Stride’s Bluetooth situation is confusing. Samsung and U.S. Cellular stamp “stereo Bluetooth” all over the Stride’s marketing materials, but the Stride has no music player, GPS, or other app that could possibly take advantage of this. The 1.3-megapixel camera has no flash or auto-focus. Test photos looked soft and grainy both indoors and out, even in bright sunlight; they’ll do in a pinch, but don’t buy this phone for its camera. There is 49MB of free internal storage, but no memory card slot; you can only share photos via picture message or Bluetooth.

U.S. Cellular has a pretty diverse lineup these days, though few devices are as inexpensive as the Stride. The LG Wine II UN430 ($39.99, 3.5 stars) remains our Editors’ Choice for its sleek styling, larger LCD displays, faster EV-DO data, built-in music player, memory card slot, and excellent voice quality; it’s easily worth the extra $30 up front. The Samsung Messager Touch SCH-R630 ($29.99, 3 stars) and the Motorola Grasp (Free, 3.5 stars) are two good choices for heavy texters, with full QWERTY keyboards and (in the case of the Messager Touch) a 2.6-inch touch screen, although neither is as quite as well rounded as the LG Wine II in other respects. Finally, if you can swing a few more bucks per month, the LG Optimus U ($29.99, 4 stars) is a killer budget Android smartphone that lets you run thousands of third-party apps, as well as browse the Web on a higher-resolution, 3.2-inch capacitive touch

I’ve never been the target market for branded cell phones. So I approached the TapouT edition of the Huawei Ascend with some trepidation. The TapouT Ascend is a budget-priced Android smartphone that I understand pretty well, dressed up with a mixed martial arts (MMA) theme. It turns out that this is mostly a cosmetic job, albeit with a welcome OS upgrade. Underneath lies the same sluggish, subpar Android device we tested in January.

TapouT Exclusives
For the uninitiated, TapouT is a clothing line and now-on-hiatus reality TV series about mixed martial arts. What does mixed martial arts have to do with cell phones? Usually, absolutely nothing—unless you’re considering hitting someone over the head with your phone. In the case of the TapouT, for your extra $20 you get a unique color scheme, two interchangeable battery covers, TapouT photos and videos, custom wallpapers, and a TapouT Android app (more on this below). MetroPCS also sells a special TapouT case for the Ascend as an accessory. Finally, by buying this phone, MetroPCS automatically enters you into a contest for two ringside seats, return flights, and accommodations at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas for the Ultimate Fighter 13 Finale on June 4th, 2011.

TapouT put their mitts all over this phone. It boots with a TapouT logo into a home screen with TapouT wallpaper and a TapouT icon. (What did you expect?) The TapouT icon leads to the extra content, including an MMA-related news feed and hundreds of recent photos. The app itself was quite slow, taking 15 to 20 seconds to move from screen to screen. I watched several streamed videos with choppy frame rates, even when connected over Wi-Fi; moving the time slider back and forth froze the app entirely.

If I’m not a TapouT fan, and not part of the target market, why am I reviewing this phone? [Because I told you to - Ed.] I want to use it as an example of what I consider a ridiculous practice of branding. The whole point of buying a smartphone is so you can customize the heck out of its software. That’s why we bristle at the way carriers like Verizon and AT&T preload apps and lock down portions of their Android phones. This phone is even worse. So in the spirit of that, why not just download the content you want separately and stick with the regular Ascend? Besides, you can buy aftermarket cases from anywhere.

It’s Still an Ascend
Okay, now I’ll get down from my soapbox. Aside from all that, this thing is a Huawei Ascend, albeit one with an OS upgrade. A quick recap: the Ascend measures 4.6 by 2.4 by 0.6 inches (HWD) and weighs 4.8 ounces. The new TapouT battery cover is invisible with the face up, so you could still use the Ascend in a board room without the boss getting suspicious. The 3.5-inch glass capacitive display offers 320-by-480-pixel resolution, which is the minimum we consider usable for an Android phone for maximum compatibility with third-party apps. There’s still a mostly-useless trackball beneath the display.

The Ascend remains a tri-band 2G 1xRTT (850/1700/1900 MHz) CDMA device with 802.11b/g Wi-Fi. Voice quality was just okay; I live in a fairly marginal MetroPCS coverage area, and it showed quite clearly with the Ascend. Callers sounded choppy in the earpiece, with plenty of computerized sounding syllables, although it didn’t actually drop any calls. Callers said I sounded about the same; things improved once I stepped outside, anyway. The buggy proximity sensor was a bigger problem; I’d pull my face away from the phone to end a call or respond to an automated system, and it would remain blank. Press the End key to wake the screen, and you’ll disconnect the call.

Apps, Multimedia, and Conclusions
One nice bonus is the Android 2.2 upgrade, which normally improves responsiveness and adds lots of little details throughout the UI. But the 528MHz, ARM11-based Ascend still managed to feel sluggish, with several second delays here and there. Battery life took a nosedive compared with the Android 2.1 version; I only saw 4 hours and 2 minutes of talk time. Music and video playback were the same as before: good but not great. The non-standard 2.5mm headphone jack is still a problem. The 3.2-megapixel auto-focus camera and camcorder perform about average for the price, although it has no LED flash, and recorded videos are still limited to 352-by-288-pixel resolution and about nine frames per second.

The Huawei Ascend TapouT Edition exists because a bunch of marketers sat in a room and came up with it as a way to distinguish an also-ran smartphone. As is the case with any special edition phone, it’s fine if you want to advertise your allegiance to all things MMA. Heck, I’ll admit it: I was partial to Fender’s (now discontinued) version of the T-Mobile myTouch 3G. I liked the classic sunburst finish, matching earbuds, and beautiful travel case, and the guitar-themed apps were neat, too. But I dinged that handset for being something of a poor deal with no actual improved functionality, and the same applies here. If it were me, I’d put the $20 toward a better smartphone like the LG Optimus M ($199, 4 stars), and go click the Like button on TapouT Worldwide’s Facebook page instead.

Samsung has finally introduced its most advanced and fastest Android powered Samsung Galaxy S II GT-I9100 Smartphone in India which features 4.3-inch Super-AMOLED Plus WVGA (800 x 480) Capacitive touchscreen and is powered by Google’s latest version of Android v2.3 Gingerbread operating system

The Samsung Galaxy S II would be known in India as model FT-i9100 and it featured 4.3-inch Super AMOLED Plus display, a more advanced version than the one on its predecessor Galaxy S smartphone model, and is expected to be priced for Rs. 32,900.

The Samsung Galaxy S II GT-i9100 smartphone is Quad-band GSM: 850, 900, 1800, 1900 Tri-band HSPA: 900, 2100, 1700 HSPA type: HSDPA (7.2Mbps) HSUPA (5.76Mbps) compatible and is powered by Dual-Core 1.2 GHz Cortex A9 processor with Mali-400MP GPU and Orion chipset, and features 1GB RAM along with 16GB/32GB of built-in flash memory and includes microSD memory card slot allowing up to 32GB expandable memory. A 8GB card is included with the package.

The new Samsung Galaxy S II GT-i9100 is powered by Android 2.3 Gingerbread plus Samsung’s TouchWiz UI v4.0 touchscreen user interface and has a 4.3-inch WVGA (480 x 800) Super AMOLED Plus Capacitive touchscreen with 16 million colors with Gorilla Glass display for enhanced protection from accidental drops and scratches.

Techcom has announced the launch of its new Techcom T-65 Mobile Phone in India that comes in a matte finish featuring dual-SIM capability, microSD card supporting large expandable memory and powerful 1800 mAh battery for ultra-long talk and stand-by time.
